Android Auto might be losing access to this game collection

2025-10-07T03:03:30+00:00
TL;DR

  • Android Auto games platform GameSnacks seems like it’s being deprecated.
  • 9to5Google has shared several user reports that the app is no longer accessible.
  • Google is working to expand native game compatibility on Android Auto.

It looks like Android Auto will soon be just a little less fun. GameSnacks, a Google-made app that contains a handful of simple games optimized for in-car displays, is seemingly being deprecated in the Android Auto beta release track, a sign that it could be shut down altogether soon.

9to5Google has shared a handful of user reports that GameSnacks is missing from the in-car app list. It’s not clear which version of the software users running into this issue have installed.

AT&T will offer you a new phone every year for three years, but what’s the catch?

TL;DR

  • AT&T now offers a free phone upgrade every year for three years when you bundle its home internet with wireless service.
  •  The deal includes AT&T Next Up Anytime, 20% off home internet, and up to $800 in switcher credits.
  • New and existing customers qualify, though existing ones only get the phone upgrade benefit.

As the competition over wireless customers continues to heat up between the big three, we’ve seen T-Mobile begin to outshine its competitors in some ways. To combat this, Verizon and AT&T are both working hard to win new users. To that end, Verizon recently announced a new Switchers promotion, and now AT&T has something new up its sleeve as well: a free smartphone every year for three years. The catch? You’ll need to bundle AT&T home internet with cellular service.

Google Japan’s latest keyboard fever dream puts a new spin on rotary dialing

2025-10-07T03:03:23+00:00
TL;DR

  • Google Japan has a long history of announcing humorous new keyboard ideas.
  • Last year the team brought us an infinitely curving Mobius strip keyboard.
  • This year we’re going back to the days of rotary phones, with a rotary-dial keyboard.

Has the Google of 2025 lost some of the spark that made the company seem like such a fun place to work in decades past? That’s probably a fair criticism, and while it may have been an inevitability for a tech firm of this size, we’re still just pleased as punch when some of that old, weird Google manages to shine through. That’s exactly why we’re as happy as we are to see the crew over at Google Japan so gleefully coming back year after year with a preposterous new keyboard design — and this year, they cooked up something just fantastically bizarre.

Google may be planning to drop Samsung for the Tensor G6’s modem for a very good reason

TL;DR

  • Google may not use a Samsung modem for its next chip.
  • A rumor suggests that the tech giant may pick MediaTek’s M90 modem instead.
  • The reason may be that the M90 modem is faster and more energy efficient.

When Google first dipped its toe into the world of semi-custom silicon development, it tapped Samsung to be its partner. After the Tensor G4, Google shook things up by switching to TSMC for the Tensor G5 (the chip in the Pixel 10). However, Google still turned to Samsung for the Tensor G5’s modem. A new rumor suggests Google could ditch Samsung completely for the next Tensor chip.

Google Maps Timeline error leaves users unable to access location history

TL;DR

  • Google Maps users are reporting an error when attempting to transfer their Timeline data to their phone.
  • The issue is preventing users from accessing their location history.
  • A potential workaround involves using another account logged into Maps, but this solution won’t allow the user to fully restore or consolidate their Timeline.

If you’ve been having trouble transferring your Google Maps Timeline data to your phone, you’re not alone. Users are encountering an error that’s preventing access to the data. There appears to be a workaround, but it’s far from being a perfect solution.

Your next phone might come without a USB cable

2025-10-07T03:03:19+00:00
TL;DR

  • A post on Reddit shows the Sony Xperia 10 VII doesn’t include a USB cable in the box.
  • Smartphones typically don’t come with chargers anymore, but cables are still standard.
  • We expect more manufacturers to follow suit in the near future.

Apple made waves with 2020’s iPhone 12, the first major smartphone to ship without an included charging brick. Apple’s public rationale was that USB chargers had become ubiquitous by then, and so no longer including them with every new device could conserve resources and reduce e-waste without causing much inconvenience for consumers. Since then, other major OEMs have done the same — smartphones that do include chargers have become the exception.

Now, it looks like we may be in for a similar shift with bundled USB cables. As shared on the Linus Tech Tips subreddit, user Brick_Fish‘s recently purchased Sony Xperia 10 VII came without a charger or a charging cable. In a photo included with the post, you can see iconography on the back of the phone’s box that spells out these omissions. Sony’s not really a major player in the smartphone space these days, but this seems like the type of trend we should expect to see gain traction over the next couple of years.

Google’s ready to pay up to $20,000 if you can break Gemini very, very badly

2025-10-07T03:03:19+00:00
TL;DR

  • Google shares new bug bounty details for AI with its Vulnerability Reward Program.
  • The most dangerous exploits can score their finders up to $20,000.

It’s not nice to be a bully. At least, not to people. But for a certain segment of AI “fans,” there’s nothing more fun than ganging up on an AI chatbot and trying to get it to do basically anything other than what’s intended. That can include hallucinating wildly incorrect answers, or even convincing the bot to ignore restrictions that its creators have tried to enforce. And now if you’re good enough at breaking AI bots in epic fashion, Google might just be willing to pay you for it.

One UI 8 brings some nice UI improvements to Galaxy tablets

2025-10-07T03:03:18+00:00
TL;DR

  • One UI 8 is now rolling out to selected Samsung tablets, including the Galaxy Tab S10 Plus.
  • The update improves app layouts for large screens, such as relocating clock controls to a side pane.
  • A redesigned Calendar app features a resizable agenda view, providing quicker access to daily events.

One of the best parts of One UI is how well it works on big screens. Samsung adds a lot of features to its tablets and foldables that make them more productive, and One UI 8, which is rolling out to several tablets, including our Galaxy Tab S10 Plus, brings some nice changes to Samsung’s apps that make using them on a large screen more pleasant.

Pixel fans are done forgiving Tensor’s underwhelming performance and efficiency

TL;DR

  • Google’s in-house Tensor chips are facing heavy criticism from fans for their subpar performance and poor battery life.
  • Readers feel that Google Pixels, which are priced as flagships, largely lack the performance to justify the price tag.
  • While some fans appreciate the AI features and software integration of the chip, many believe that its flaws outweigh its benefits.

The recently launched Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 looks promising on paper, and Qualcomm seems poised for another successful year, securing its place among top Android flagships once again. Despite its dominance, it’s looking unlikely that a Snapdragon SoC will make its way to a Google Pixel flagship anytime soon, and my colleague C. Scott Brown is actually glad that Pixels don’t use Snapdragon. Much like he predicted, this opinion was highly controversial, and it seems a lot of our readers are done forgiving Tensor for its mediocrity.
